Entire Career of Income Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Study Reveals

Based on fresh study, the typical earner in the UK would have to work half a century of salary to reach the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Growing Wealth Gap Across Decades

The study analyzed wealth distribution data covering the Covid pandemic period and discovered that back in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required 38 years of typical employment income to join the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

A senior economist associated with the analysis commented: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a average worker saving all their earnings during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The analysis found that the gap between the wealth of the typical individual and someone in the wealthiest decile was £1m in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3 million in real terms by 2020-22.

The economist continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – people that start life well-off tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the financial disparity widening in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," per the analysis.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Economic Disparity

Termed "passive" appreciation, via increasing property values and adjustments to pension valuations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, as stated in the study.

These appreciations typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed stark geographic differences, with the average level of net worth in the pandemic period reaching £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, compared with £110,000 in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows countless homes were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the report finds.
