EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
