In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without immediately offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
