Sheffield Wednesday Deals with Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties constitute a "major concern" and the new football authority is seeking powers to look into club affairs in comparable cases, the recently named head the regulator has declared.

During an extensive discussion, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, expressed "sympathy" towards supporters of the Owls.

The chairman convened with four fan organizations connected to the South Yorkshire club recently.

The Championship side have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in the autumn.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the great brands for the English game and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We are seeking authority... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and dealt with."

Financial Struggles and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has failed to complete a sale with potential new owners.

Delayed salary payments on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the English Football League (EFL) in June, preventing the club from carrying out any recruitment activities for the subsequent signing windows, although those limitations were removed in the end of the transfer window.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, teams facing challenges where people are committed to a community organization that has existed throughout their lifetimes in multiple situations.

"I completely understand the club's situation, as I do for every team that over recent decades have faced collapse, or been close to going to the wall, for factors unrelated to the followers."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we gather the evidence and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the regulator would prefer to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an specific team, an individual owner, without being able to work with that proprietor to address the challenges confronting the team and the proprietor's dealing with," Kogan said.

"But the truth is, when you examine the past of football, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been particular chairmen, a small minority, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the manner they have operated their teams and eventually refuse to accept accountability for the coming years."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The regulator engaged representatives from 110 clubs to explain the responsibilities of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear swiftly," the regulator warned.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we've got to keep it going.

"Substantial financial resources flowing into the game and has been invested for the recent generations, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Top flight officials resisted the formation of an authority because of concerns about detrimental effects on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the regulator stated: "I'm absolutely committed to the success and growth as an financial organization of the elite league.

"As someone who appreciates the apprehension regarding damaging the Premier League as a premium product of this country. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, indeed, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Political Connections

Kogan is still facing a "thorough examination" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the Labour Party in 2020.

The chairman contributed funds to government minister the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the select committee approved my appointment," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any type of partisan engagement."
