In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
