US and UK Alert of Significant Electronic Visa Information Leak in Somali Nation

At least 35,000 people might be impacted, alerts the United States embassy

A substantial information leak in Somalia's digital visa application system potentially disclosed private data pertaining to many thousands of travelers, involving United States passport holders, the US embassy in the Somali nation has warned.

It said had received reliable information that "unidentified hackers" compromised the Somali government's e-visa platform, potentially compromising information belonging to at least 35,000 individuals.

The leaked documents being shared on the internet contain names, images, date of birth information, marital status, residential locations and email contacts, per a American diplomatic communication released on Thursday.

"This information compromise continues to occur and might reveal all private information provided to this platform," British authorities has also warned travelers.

"Consider the risks when considering application for an e-visa mandatory for entry into Somalia."

Administrative Action

Government officials have not issued statements about the security compromise. But authorities has moved its visa service from evisa.gov.so to the new system etas.gov.so, without issuing an official explanation.

"While American diplomatic mission in Somalia is unable to confirm whether an individual's data is included in the breach, travelers who have requested visas via the digital application platform could be impacted," the official communication declared.

Territorial Consequences

The revised application procedure mandates every visitor, including those from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to request entry visas through digital means.

Commentators state travellers have faced extra fees in particular territories, amounting to repeated fees.

Geopolitical Background

The northern territory, that announced sovereignty in 1991, manages its territory through independent structures but has not been global recognition. Mogadishu authorities insists that the region still constitutes its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident contributes to persistent conflicts concerning central government and Hargeisa concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. Even though Mogadishu regained full control of territorial skies in the past decade, northern authorities regularly disputes the arrangement.

Ongoing Conflict

The dispute intensified in recent days after the northern region's leader the regional leader stated Somaliland would refuse Mogadishu's electronic visa and directed that aviation companies must obtain clearance from northern authorities before entering their territorial skies.

Nevertheless leading carriers have declined to process individuals lacking federal visa authorization.

In the latest development, Somaliland's Foreign Minister the diplomatic representative again insisted that "every person entering Somaliland will obtain their visa on arrival", stating Somalia's e-visa system lacked security and alerting that "personal information might be obtained by radical elements" as a result of using it.

Aviation Challenges

The impasse has left certain visitors destined for the northern region stranded at airports following refusal of entry for lacking the federal electronic visa.

The northern region's aviation official, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has informed media outlets that the regulations - initially declared previously - were implemented on the tenth of November.

Officials declared carriers that refuse will be told to divert, and claimed several aircraft were previously redirected.

Jurisdictional Battle

Footage distributed by the northern region's air transport department seems to demonstrate regional aviation officials providing guidance to global airline crews - a development celebrated domestically as a demonstration of northern self-governance.

But the federal aviation regulator asserts it maintains exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (FIR), which covers the whole nation's airspace. Authorities have instructed all aircraft to disregard any instructions provided by entities except federal authorities.

Authorities alerted that not adhering to Somali and international aviation rules could generate aviation dangers and cause "serious legal consequences".
